Theme 1: Interoperability of Learning Object Repositories and Ontology Referencing
Focusing on interoperability, the projects in this theme explore different aspects of how systems and people build and exchange knowledge together. Grounded in both computational and educational theory prototype systems are developed and evaluated.

Theme 2: Learning Design and Multi-actor Scenario Support
Learning object design and aggregation is an important educational goal. Small modular learning objects have nice software properties, but they tend to decompose knowledge into non-significant pieces in a factory-like fashion. Furthermore, the information resources must be related to the operations and the persons enacting them. Learning objects need to be integrated into larger wholes that make sense to their users. The five (5) integrated sub-projects of Theme 2 will present research progress.

Panel: Paradigms of Research
Research on eLearning systems brings together educators and computer scientists, two groups with different professional preparation, priorities and paradigms of research. The ultimate exploitation and adoption of their research advances may be dependant upon pragmatic factors of an administrative or economic nature. Leading researchers will share the predominant paradigms of research in their field, and discuss barriers to adoption of eLearning systems.
Panellists: Terry Anderson, Doug MacLeod, Rob Koper, Ralf Steinmetz, Griff Richards

Theme 3 : Active and Adaptive Learning Objects
The prime objective of this research theme is to make learning objects actively able to adapt to the context of their use. The learning object is raw material that ideally can be used in different ways, for different purposes, and in different contexts. This notion of repurposing is fundamental to the concept of learning object repositories, but it is not easily achieved. Until now content specialists must manually adapt and reconfigure learning objects to meet new purposes. This is a time consuming task and a serious bottleneck. While current technologies do not support automation of this task, innovations through this theme are focusing on the issue of computer support to learning object adaptation and repurposing.

Theme 4 : Learning Objects Data Mining and Knowledge Extraction
In this presentation we start by an overview of the objectives of knowledge and data mining for learning objects and the projects of this theme to achieve these objectives. Progress and results achieved so far in phrase extraction, semantic knowledge synthesis, image mining, and reinforcement learning will be discussed.
